Be Authentic

In previous posts, we’ve discussed the importance of building relationships, developing your executive presence, and living your personal brand. The secret sauce of all this – what makes it work – is when you do these things in an authentic way. It is not about trying to look like someone else or doing things the way someone else would do them. It’s about knowing yourself, bringing your best to the table, and giving yourself room to develop and grow. Authenticity is attractive. You will stand out far more in the workplace when you embrace the real you than you ever would trying to mimic someone else. Authenticity is also necessary for consistent behaviors and actions that are sustainable over the long haul. Be authentic and bring your best self to your work.

Being authentic is about staying true to your values and honing the skills you need to be most effective in the organizations and communities in which you work. Revisit your values and strengths. Think about the skills you want to develop. Being authentic does not mean staying static or being dogmatic about how you do things. Give yourself room to evolve and progress by stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying new things. Constantly learn and strive to be the best you can be. Let go of any limiting beliefs that might be holding you back and make sure your identity reflects who you truly are today. Stay true to your core values and continue to stretch as you create the career you want.
